Chinese EV manufacturer BYD is making headlines again with its announcement of a new, smaller electric car aimed at the Australian market. This upcoming model, potentially named the Seagull or Dolphin Mini, could position itself as the cheapest EV available in Australia, following the success of its predecessor, the Dolphin.
The BYD Dolphin made a splash when it debuted in mid-2023 as Australia’s most affordable new EV, priced at $38,890 before on-road costs. It outperformed the MG 4 by just $100 at the time. However, the competitive landscape has shifted, with the MG 4 now offering a limited-time promotional price of $30,990 drive-away and the GWM Ora also reducing its prices to $33,990 drive-away.
Despite BYD’s own adjustments, including a $2,000 price reduction for the Dolphin to $36,890, competitors have been aggressive in their pricing strategies amidst a stagnating interest in EVs.
Strategy for Sustainability
When questioned about the possibility of further reducing the Dolphin’s price to reclaim its title as the most affordable EV, BYD’s Australian importer CEO, David Smitherman, expressed caution. He emphasized the importance of maintaining brand value and residuals over aggressive price cuts. “We’re here for the long term, and I want to make sure we always put the brand first,” he stated, reflecting a strategy focused on sustainability and long-term viability rather than short-term gains.
Dolphin Mini: The Smallest EV
The forthcoming Dolphin Mini will feature a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery with a capacity of up to 38.88 kWh, providing a claimed driving range of 405 km under Chinese testing standards. Measuring 3,780 mm in length, it sits comfortably between compact cars like the Suzuki Swift and the Kia Picanto.
Smitherman also confirmed BYD’s commitment to expanding its lineup with plans for smaller vehicles and SUVs, indicating a strategic move to cater to varying consumer needs and preferences.
In addition to the Dolphin Mini, BYD is exploring the introduction of the Yuan Up, a compact SUV positioned below the Atto 3. The brand is also looking to expand into larger SUV segments to ensure a comprehensive offering for Australian consumers.
The next model set to hit the market is the Sealion 7 mid-size electric SUV, followed by the Fangchengbao Bao 5 off-road SUV, which shares its platform with the Shark 6 ute. Moreover, the Yangwang sub-brand is poised to bring high-end options to Australia, including the LandCruiser-rivalling Yangwang U8.
