Ford has announced that it will now ship a new North American Charging Standard (NACS) adapter supplied by Lectron. This decision comes as part of Ford’s efforts to provide quicker access to Tesla Supercharger stations, addressing supply chain delays that have impacted the rollout of these essential charging accessories.
The NACS Adapter Rollout
According to reports from InsideEVs, Ford’s new NACS adapter will complement the existing Tesla-provided adapters, which the automaker began distributing earlier this year. Both adapter types share the same impressive specifications—rated at 500 amps and 1,000 volts—but feature slight design differences.
The Lectron adapters began shipping to customers on October 31, ensuring that those waiting for an adapter have an option that meets the required standards for Tesla Supercharger access. This addition is not intended to replace the original Tesla adapters but is described as an “incremental” measure to expedite the distribution process. Customers in line may receive either the new Lectron adapter or the earlier model.
Free Adapter Offer for Ford EV Owners
Ford has committed to supporting its customers by offering one free adapter per vehicle to all new and existing EV owners who signed up for its charging aggregator before June 30 of this year. For those who miss this window, the adapters will be available for purchase at $230. Additionally, Ford has established a distinct process for fleet customers through its Ford Pro division.
This initiative comes on the heels of a recently identified issue with a batch of Tesla-sourced adapters that could lead to reduced charging speeds or potential damage to vehicles’ charge ports. Ford has proactively advised affected customers to cease using those specific adapters while replacements arrive.
As part of a broader industry trend, Ford was among the first major automakers to announce a transition to the Tesla charge port last year, with other companies like General Motors and Rivian following suit. With the introduction of these new adapters, Ford continues to solidify its position in the EV market, prioritizing customer convenience and access to essential charging infrastructure.
