Rivian Expands Beyond Amazon
Rivian’s electric delivery vans are no longer exclusive to Amazon. The EV maker has officially opened sales of its Rivian Commercial Van to all fleet customers. This move follows years of exclusive production for Amazon, which originally ordered 100,000 vans by 2030 as part of a $440 million investment in Rivian.
Since hitting the road in 2021, over 20,000 Rivian vans have joined Amazon’s fleet. Now, Rivian is looking to capture a broader market by offering its all-electric delivery vans to businesses worldwide.
Rivian Commercial Van: Specs & Pricing
The new Rivian Commercial Van closely resembles the Electric Delivery Van (EDV) made for Amazon. It comes in two models:
- Rivian Commercial Van 500 – Priced at $82,900, measuring 248.5 inches long with a 157.5-inch wheelbase
- Rivian Commercial Van 700 – Priced at $86,900, measuring 278 inches long with a 187-inch wheelbase
Cargo space varies between models:
- 500 Model – 487 cubic feet with a 2,663-pound payload
- 700 Model – 652 cubic feet with a 2,258-pound payload
Both models have a 9,500-pound GVWR and are powered by a single 320-hp front-wheel-drive motor with 299 lb-ft of torque.
Range & Charging Capabilities
A 100-kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery provides:
- Up to 161 miles for the 500 model
- Up to 160 miles for the 700 model
Charging options include 100 kW DC fast charging via a CCS connector and 11 kW AC charging. While Rivian plans to adopt Tesla’s NACS connector for its passenger vehicles, the Commercial Van will launch with CCS.
Competing in the Electric Van Market
Rivian’s new van enters a competitive space alongside the Ford E-Transit, Mercedes-Benz eSprinter, Ram ProMaster EV, and Chevrolet BrightDrop vans. While some competitors are electric versions of gas-powered models, Rivian’s van is built from the ground up as an EV—offering optimized efficiency, storage, and tech.
The Future of Electric Delivery
As more businesses shift toward sustainable transportation, Rivian’s expansion could reshape the commercial EV market. With Amazon’s backing and a proven track record, the Rivian Commercial Van might soon become a go-to choice for fleet operators worldwide.
