Stellantis, the parent company of well-known brands such as Dodge, Ram, Jeep, and Fiat, has revealed a new platform designed for electrified full-size trucks and SUVs. Known as the STLA Frame, this platform is to support both battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and range-extender electric vehicles (REEVs), in addition to offering compatibility with other powertrains, including internal combustion engines (ICE), hybrid systems, and potentially hydrogen technology.
Key Features of the Platform
The STLA Frame platform meets the rigorous demands of large trucks and SUVs. It features dual electric drive motors to provide all-wheel-drive capabilities, delivering impressive performance for heavy-duty vehicles. Notable features of the platform include:
- 500 miles of all-electric range for BEVs
- 690 miles for REEVs, which include a gas-powered generator to extend the driving range when the battery is depleted
- 2,700-pound payload capacity
- 14,000-pound towing capacity
This combination of extended range, high payload, and towing capacity makes the STLA Frame platform particularly suitable for vehicles that require both performance and utility, such as pickups and SUVs.
First Vehicles to Feature STLA
The first vehicles to utilize the STLA Frame platform will include the Ram 1500 REV, an electric pickup, and the Ramcharger, a range-extender electric truck. While Jeep models using this platform have not been officially confirmed, there is speculation that future Wagoneer or Grand Wagoneer models may be the first Jeep vehicles to adopt this platform.
Stellantis originally planned to launch these new models by late 2024, but the company has adjusted its timeline. The updated target for the release of these vehicles is for the first half of 2025. According to Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, the delay is a strategic decision to ensure thorough validation of the technology, guaranteeing the durability and performance standards required for such high-demand vehicles.
This announcement is part of Stellantis’ broader strategy to enhance its electrification efforts. The company aims to achieve 100% electrification of its passenger vehicles in Europe by 2030. While the transition to electric powertrains for its popular trucks and SUVs is a significant step, Stellantis continues to prioritize customer needs, aiming to offer a range of powertrain options to meet diverse market demands.
The introduction of the STLA Frame platform highlights Stellantis’ commitment to investing in versatile, high-performance electric vehicle solutions. The new platform not only caters to the growing demand for electric vehicles but also positions the company as a leader in the development of robust, multi-energy platforms that can support a range of vehicle types and powertrains.
