Tesla’s global influence continues to expand, with a significant milestone achieved by its Giga Shanghai facility. As of now, over 107,000 Tesla electric vehicles (EVs) have been exported to Australian roads, marking a major milestone in the country’s EV market.
A Major Export Hub
Since beginning exports in April 2021, Tesla’s Giga Shanghai has become a crucial export hub for the company, producing nearly 50% of all EVs sold in Australia. Tesla China recently celebrated its 1-million-vehicle-export milestone, with a large portion of these vehicles heading to markets such as Europe, Asia Pacific, and Australia.
Tesla Vice President Grace Tao shared that Tesla exported its models made in China to many countries and regions and is valuable for overseas markets. The announcement reinforces Tesla’s global strategy of meeting rising demand through efficient production hubs like Giga Shanghai.
Australia’s relationship with Tesla dates back to 2011 when the original Tesla Roadster hit the market. Over the years, Tesla has strengthened its presence in the country, with the Model S, Model X, and Model 3 following suit. Initially, these vehicles were from the Fremont Factory in California, but since Giga Shanghai took over, the factory has been Tesla’s primary source of exports.
In 2023, the Tesla Model Y overtook the Model 3 as Australia’s top-selling electric vehicle, with 28,769 units sold. As of August 2024, the Model Y continues to lead the charts with 15,199 sales, followed by the reengineered Model 3 at 12,902 units.
Australia Continues Exports
Tesla’s growing footprint in Australia reflects the broader shift towards electric vehicles in the country. With Giga Shanghai continuing its rapid production pace, it’s likely that Tesla’s influence will only deepen in Australia and other international markets.
