A Familiar Name Goes Electric
Honda is bringing back the Insight, but not in the way fans remember. Once known as a hybrid hatchback and sedan, the Insight is now a compact electric crossover SUV.
Orders open in Japan on April 17, with pricing starting at about $34,500.
Built on a China-Developed Platform
The new Insight EV is based on Honda’s e:NS2 platform, developed through its joint venture in China. It already exists in the Chinese market and now serves as the foundation for this Japan-only release.
The move marks a rare case of Honda launching a China-built EV for its domestic market.
Solid Range and Everyday Performance
The Insight EV is expected to deliver up to 332 miles (535 km) of WLTP range. Fast charging can take the battery from low levels to around 80% in roughly 40 minutes.
It is powered by a front-mounted electric motor producing about 200 hp, giving it balanced performance for daily driving.
Tech-Focused Interior Experience
Inside, the SUV features a 12.8-inch central touchscreen, a 9.4-inch driver display, and a large head-up display that acts as the main driving information hub.
Comfort features include ambient lighting, a BOSE 12-speaker audio system, and even an aroma diffuser. Drivers can also choose between multiple drive modes including Sport, Econ, and Snow.
Limited Production Makes It Hard to Get
Despite its modern specs and relatively affordable price, the Insight EV will be extremely limited. Honda plans to produce only 3,000 units for Japan.
There are no confirmed plans for a U.S. release, making this more of a niche regional model rather than a global comeback.
