Hyundai to Offer Free NACS Adapters for Tesla Superchargers

Hyundai to Offer Free NACS Adapters for Tesla Superchargers

Hyundai is enhancing convenience for its EV owners by offering free North American Charging Standard (NACS) adapters. These adapters will grant Hyundai EVs access to Tesla’s expansive Supercharger network. Starting in the first quarter of 2025, eligible drivers can request the complimentary adapter with shipping included. Details on the process, terms, and instructions will follow soon.

Wide Eligibility for Hyundai EV Owners

Unlike some automakers, Hyundai is making the adapters widely available to U.S. owners of its EVs purchased or leased by January 31, 2025. Eligible models include:

  • Hyundai Kona Electric (2018–2025)
  • Hyundai Ioniq Electric (2017–2022)
  • Hyundai Ioniq 5 (2022–2024)
  • Hyundai Ioniq 5 N (2025)
  • Hyundai Ioniq 6 (2023–2025)

Genesis, Hyundai’s luxury division, is also included in this initiative, with additional details expected early next year.

Hyundai vs. Kia: A Different Approach

Hyundai’s strategy contrasts sharply with its sibling brand Kia. Kia’s NACS-to-CCS adapters are only available for EV6 and EV9 models sold after September 2024, leaving earlier Kia EV owners excluded. Hyundai, however, is ensuring that nearly all of its U.S. EV lineup can benefit from Tesla Supercharger access, making it more inclusive for a wide range of customers.

Adapting to Charging Needs

Hyundai is taking steps to simplify charging with its newer EVs. The 2025 Ioniq 5 lineup will feature a native NACS port, making Tesla Supercharger access seamless. However, models like the Ioniq 5 N will still require a CCS adapter for maximum charging rates due to Supercharger network limitations. Tesla’s upcoming V4 Supercharger cabinets, expected in 2025, aim to resolve this by supporting 800-volt systems, unlocking faster charging for vehicles like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Tesla Cybertruck.

Looking Ahead

Hyundai’s move signals a customer-focused approach to improving EV charging accessibility. While the adapter solution may not yet be perfect for all fast-charging scenarios, it represents a significant step in unifying charging standards and supporting EV adoption. As the Supercharger network evolves, Hyundai owners will benefit from more convenient and comprehensive charging options in the near future.
